The Guyana Water Inc. (GWI) commenced works on the new water treatment plant on the West Demerara Public Road in Wales, Region Three, in June of 2023.

The $1.375 billion facility is one among four planned treatment plants for Region Three. The others are slated to be built in Parika, Wakenaam, and Leguan.

The plant, which is being built by HJ Pro Ecologicos S.A de CV, will have a capacity of 8.1 Minimal Liquid Discharge (MLD).

Once completed, the plant will supply treated water to residents from Free and Easy to La Retriate, Canal No. 2, and Belle West.

This investment is part of the Government’s plan to achieve 100% treated water by 2025. The new plant is expected to allow treated water coverage to rise to 90%.

The Wales water treatment plant is expected to be completed by the end of the year, well within its January 2025 deadline.
