The Occupational Safety and Health (OSH) Department of the Ministry of Labour launched an investigation into a fatal accident that claimed the life of 36-year-old Venezuelan national, Rusbel Azocar. It occurred at approximately 18:40 hrs. on Saturday February 10, at the Vreed-en-Hoop Shore Base construction site, Best Foreshore, Region Three (Essequibo Islands-West Demerara). He was subcontracted by Gas Total Solution Inc. to serve in the capacity of the Health & Safety Assistant.
On Sunday morning Ms. Maxean Bess, the Assistant Chief Occupational Safety and Health (OSH) Officers of the Ministry of Labour, and Mr. Roydon Croal, launched the investigation into this workplace fatality. An inspection of the accident site was conducted in the presence of representatives of Jan De Nul Inc who subcontracted Gas Total Solutions Guyana Inc Mr. Azocar.
According to reports received by the Ministry of Labour, the deceased was working to build a barrier around a water-filled hole on the southern portion of the quay wall at the location. He fell into the pit while doing this. According to witnesses, Azocar was not wearing a life jacket, even though it was required.
The Ministry continues to urge employers to provide safe working environments in keeping with the Occupational Health and Safety regulations of the country.
