Police are investigating a fatal accident that occurred at the junction of the Heroes Highway and the Diamond Main Access Road, at 18:10hrs on Tuesday, January 23, that resulted in the death of two persons and left four injured.
Police enquiries revealed that Daniel Gomes, a 21-year-old of Providence Housing Scheme, was proceeding South along the eastern carriageway of Heroes Highway at a fast rate in motor car PAD 6435. There were five other occupants of the car, namely: Britney Hendricks, age 23; Ellie Persaud, age two years; Tresha Singh (age unknown); Bagot Singh, age 50 years; and Emily Persaud, one-year-old; all of Providence Housing Scheme, EBD.
As he approached the junction of Heroes Highway and Diamond Main Access Road, where there is a ‘Diversion’ with reflectors and road markings lawfully placed for vehicles to turn West (right) into Diamond Main Access Road only, the driver failed to make a right turn at the said Diversion and continued further South.
This resulted in the motor car colliding with some concrete piles lying on the side of Diamond Main Access Road. The driver along with the five occupants received injuries to their heads and other parts of their bodies.
The occupants of the back seat (Emily Persaud, Ellie Persaud and Tresha Singh) were taken out of the car by public-spirited citizens and transported to the Diamond Diagnostic Centre where they were all seen and examined by doctors on duty.
Emily Persaud, the one-year-old, died while receiving medical treatment, while the other two occupants were admitted for further observation.
At the scene, the Emergency Medical Team arrived and checked and examined the driver and the remaining two occupants. They were all placed into the Ambulance and taken to the Diamond Diagnostic Centre, to be examined by doctors on duty.
Bagot Singh was pronounced dead on arrival, while the driver was admitted as a patient. Britney Hendricks was referred to the Georgetown Public Hospital, where she was admitted as a patient in the Critical Bay (Accident and Emergency Unit).
The bodies of Bagot Singh and Emily Persaud were escorted to the Memorial Gardens Funeral Home, where they await post-mortem examinations.
