The Guyana Fire Service has spent the last eight days conducting several community outreach programs all around the country to promote fire safety, in keeping with its fire awareness campaign. These outreaches were held in several communities like Pouderoyen, Grove, Ogle, Linden, Lusignan, Anna Regina, Mabaruma, Mahaica, Melanie, and Georgetown.
The GFS has been raising awareness and sensitization through pamphlets, fire safety talks, lectures, and demonstrations on the proper use of fire extinguishers as well as fire safety training. These were held at Community Centers, Supermarkets, Airports, Military Bases, Snackettes, Malls, Hospitals and other organizations.
This Fire Safety Awareness Campaign follows the end of what many call a ‘Firey year’ and an appalling report of more than twenty fires since the commencement of 2024. The Guyana Fire Service noted that “these fires have originated from electrical issues, arson, and, in some cases, negligence.”
In an official Press Release, the GFS emphasized that “citizens can expect to learn about fire safety and prevention from our firemen, who are responsible for promoting awareness one person at a time. We hope to educate communities about fire safety, evacuation methods, and the value of early detection through outreach activities, public education, and collaboration with local groups.”
The Guyana Fire Service is committed to improving community involvement in an ongoing effort to increase awareness and stop fires in the future.
