President Dr. Irfaan Ali on Thursday night shared the Government’s plan to purchase several small fire-fighting vehicles to be issued to Neighborhood Democratic Councils (NDCs) across the country.
The President said this, along with an investment in fire hydrants, will serve to support the work of the Guyana Fire Service, as they develop Guyana’s national fire-fighting capabilities.
This was shared during a walkabout at Farm and Mocha Arcadia on Thursday night when he was asked about the Government’s intention to improve firefighting in the country. These walks were a part of efforts to provide improvement to communities.
During the visit to Mocha, the president met scores of farmers and residents who had the opportunity to raise their issues and concerns. President Ali made commitments to assist the farmers and address concerns related to roads, water, and drainage.
He was joined by the Minister of Agriculture, Zulfikar Mustapha; Minister of Natural Resources, Vickram Bharrat; Minister within the Office of the Prime Minister with Responsibility for Public Affairs, Kwame Mc Coy and Minister within the Ministry of Public Works, Deodat Indar.
In a press release issued on Wednesday, the Guyana Fire Service stated that there have been upwards of twenty fires since the year started. This alarming rate of fires stemmed from cases of electrical issues, arson, and even negligence. These fires have resulted in loss of property, and two persons have perished.
