Plans are afoot for a complete review of the country’s procurement system. This was disclosed by the General Secretary of the People’s Progressive Party Bharrat Jagdeo at his weekly press conference on Thursday, May 23.
The General Secretary issued a stern warning to all public officers responsible for procurement across the various government agencies of the government’s intention to scrutinize procurement procedures for compliance and indicated that those found in breach of the procurement laws would be made to face the consequences.
“Let me put on notice all those people who are responsible for procurement in public corporations, statutory bodies, the Ministries, Regions…everywhere…all the way up to the National Tender Board. We are examining the procurement procedures for compliance with the laws.”
The causes for unnecessary delays in the disbursement of payment to contractors after works have been completed is another issue that will be addressed as part of the procurement system review.
