Motorcyclist dies after breaching traffic light

Kwesi Griffith, a 42-year-old resident of 601 Block X, Liliendaal, is now dead following an accident at the Rupert Craig Highway and Sheriff Street junction around 23:56hrs on Sunday evening. 

It is alleged that PAB 5158 was being driven along the southern carriage of the Rupert Craig Highway at a fast rate, with the traffic light indicating green in his direction.

 

Griffith, who was driving motorcycle CK 7323 was proceeding east along the northern carriageway of the Highway, with the traffic light indicating red in his direction. 

As the two drivers approached the junction of the Highway and Sheriff Street, the deceased breached the traffic light signal and turned right into Sheriff Street, into the path of the motorcar. 

Subsequently, the left side of the front section of the motorcar came into contact with the motorcycle, and Griffith was flung some distance into the air.

 

He landed on the road surface on the northern corner of the southern carriageway of the Rupert Craig Highway, receiving injuries about his body. 

According to Police, no helmet was seen or found at the scene.  The driver of the motorcar was subjected to a breathalyzer test, but no alcohol was found in his system. 

 

Griffith was pronounced dead at the scene by an Emergency Medical Team, and his body was taken to the Memorial Gardens Mortuary, awaiting a postmortem examination.  

Investigations are ongoing.
