In a press release issued on Wednesday, the Guyana Fire Service stated that there have been upwards of twenty fires since the year started. This alarming rate of fires stemmed from cases of electrical issues, arson, and even negligence.

The Guyana Fire Service continues to offer relief, recently dealing with two major fires on Monday that saw a junkyard and home being destroyed in Region Four. On Wednesday, a two-storey building and its contents were destroyed, affecting another house in the vicinity.

In addition to the major physical damage from a large amount of fires this year, two lives had been lost.

In an effort to raise awareness and prevent future fires, the Fire Service is reaching out to enhance community engagement through outreach events, public education, and collaboration with local organizations.

The aim is to “educate residents on fire safety measures, evacuation procedures, and the importance of early detection”.

Citizens are reminded to equip homes with fire extinguishers, smoke detectors, and fire alarms.

Additionally, do not leave children unattended or at home without adult supervision. Educate children on the dangers of fire starters (matches and lighters) and warn them about their use or misuse.

Keep children away from the cooking area, and ensure matches and lighters are out of their reach at all times. Be vigilant, exercise caution, and practice fire safety and prevention to avoid home fires.
