On January 6, a John Fernandes employee at the Water Street Wharf was crushed to death by a machine around 7:38 this morning.
Reports revealed that the 64-year-old man was walking behind a super reach stacker as it was reversing and was struck down by the counterweight at the rear of the vehicle.
Jones, who had just completed his shift at 6:00 am, subsequently fell to the side and was fatally injured by the rear right wheel of the machine.
The accident occurred between the facility’s main entrance and the wharf. The Occupational Safety and Health (OSH) Officers, Ms. Johana Vaughn and Ms. Neza King visited the scene to begin investigations.
The deceased was a Mandela Avenue resident, whose 22 years working at the company culminated in him being a Foreman at the Wharf.
The Guyana Police Force and the Ministry of Labor’s Occupational Safety and Health Department are currently investigating the matter.
