Guyana’s Cricket sensation Shamar Joseph won the International Cricket Council’s Men’s Player of the Month award for January 2024. According to the ICC, Joseph’s outstanding debut for the West Indies in their thrilling Test series in Australia was the reason he was given this distinction.
The ICC reported that in the second innings, Joseph had to defend a score of 216 runs to prevent an Australian victory. Joseph used his unique fast bowling skills to bowl the home team out eight runs short of the objective.
Aside from the Gabba Test victory, Joseph had several other momentous milestones in January, like being named Player of the Gabba Match. He was also named the leading wicket-taker for West Indies in the Test series, and he landed a contract with the Indian Premier League (IPL) to play for the Lucknow Super Giant (LSG) and a contract with the Pakistan Super League.
Joseph expressed his appreciation for being the recipient of the coveted prize, saying that “taking the wicket to win the match was a dream”. He also expressed his gratitude for the opportunity to play for the West Indies team, which allowed him the opportunity to even be considered for the ICC Player of the Month Title.
