Guyana’s leadership in Climate Security is stellar, Minister Edghill tells 3rd ICAO Global Implementation Support Symposium
Earlier on Wednesday, Minister of Public Works, Hon. Bishop Juan Edghill, outlined Guyana’s stellar leadership role in Climate Security, during a presentation at the 3rd ICAO Global Implementation Support Symposium.
Minister Edghill said, “The Government’s position on the subject is not only for Guyana, but the entire CARICOM. Guyana currently holds the Chairmanship of the Caribbean Community/ CARICOM.”
“Prosperity of Guyana means prosperity of the entire region,” Minister Edghill stated.
He told the industry leaders and partners that even as aviation is an important sector for the economic development of Guyana, the government believes in prioritising development needs so that all sectors can be developed in unison.
The government’s commitment to minimizing the adverse effects of civil aviation on climate change has been demonstrated by its adherence to ICAO policies, recommendations and guidelines.
Guyana’s carbon units are authorized for use in the Carbon Offsetting and Reduction Scheme for International Aviation CORSIA.
Also today, the ICAO Council President congratulated Guyana for being an example in its significant accomplishment in the authorization of carbon units for use in the CORSIA for the 2024-2026 compliance period. “This is a timely announcement that will set the stage for other countries to follow,” Mr. Salvatore Sciacchitano noted, during a meeting with Minister Edghill and other high-level officials from the International Civil Aviation Organisation.
During the meeting, developments in Guyana and the aviation sector, as well as the ICAO’s willingness to support continuous capacity building for safety enhancement in Guyana were also discussed.
Attending the meeting were the ICAO Council President Mr. Salvatore Sciacchitano, ICAO Secretary General Mr. Juan Carlos Salazar, ICAO South American Regional Director, Mr. Fabio Rabani, Director of ICAO’s Air Transport Bureau, Mr. Mohammed Khalifa Rahma and Mr. Saheed Sulaman, Deputy Director General, Guyana Civil Aviation Authority.
Minister Edghill was also acknowledged by the ICAO for his stellar leadership in the ICAO High-Level Meeting on Long-Term Aspirational Goals on Environmental Sustainabil
