Guyana has produced over 20 million pounds of cassava for 2024. This is according to President Dr Mohamed Irfaan Ali. President Ali made the disclosure during an outreach in Bonasika Creek, Region Three.

The president credits the massive harvest to the introduction of a new variety of cassava that “moved the yield from 15 tonnes per hectare to 30 tonnes per hectare.”

The increase in cassava production has paved the way for farmers to sell farine to the Brazilian market thus resulting in increased income.

Additionally, “a total of 20,000 pounds of cassava sticks were recently distributed to Region One farmers whose crops were destroyed by fire caused by El Niño.” Some 500,000 pounds of cassava were distributed to communities in Region Nine to ramp up agriculture production in the region.
