In a recent announcement, Guyana Power & Light Inc (GPL) has mandated an essential upgrade for all prepaid meters. The upgrade, which seeks to enhance the secure messaging system of the meters, will result in a transition from version 4 to version 6 of the Standard Transfer System (STS).

The system upgrade will commence on Tuesday, May 7, 2024.

The Secure Messaging System is a vital communication platform for prepaid meters, facilitating the seamless transfer of electricity tokens. The upgrade extends beyond Guyana, impacting over 70 million prepaid meter users globally.

Failure to adhere to the upgrade notice by the specified deadline will result in meters rejecting any prepaid tokens issued thereafter. The power company noted that to streamline the process, GPL will prioritize customers for upgrades based on their meter numbers.

Pre-paid meter customers are required to contact GPL via phone call or WhatsApp message on 603 8645 or 690 3128 for the STS token.

During the upgrade process, customers must provide essential information, including their meter number, account number, and cell phone number for SMS notifications. This data will facilitate a smooth transition to the upgraded system, minimizing disruptions to electricity services.

The power company is urging all prepaid meter customers to participate in the upgrade exercise proactively and noted that November 1 is the deadline for the upgrade.
