The Guyana Prision Service in keeping with the Government’s Restorative Justice mandate which aims at equipping offenders with practical skills that will make the reintegration process smoother, facilitated a Tilapia rearing training session for the inmates at the Timehri Prision. This one-day training programme led by officials from the Ministry of Agriculture Fisheries Department focused on the rearing, feeding and capturing of tilapia.

The initiative, according to Director of Prisons Mr. Nicklon Elliot, shows how hard the Prison Service is working to find new and creative ways to assist inmates in learning new skills. Staff members and prisoners alike took the initiative to give the overall jail population an additional food source.

The Tilapia Hatchery was established in the Timehri Prison site. In addition to the training, the tilapia hatchery produced 36 pounds of red tilapia on Tuesday, demonstrating its continued success.

The Guyana Prison Service is steadfast in its mission to promote successful reintegration of offenders into society.
