A team of medical practitioners at Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC) created history yesterday, after successfully completing a Laparoscopic Donor Nephrectomy.
Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC) in their official statement highlighted that the procedure is a “minimally invasive surgery used to remove a living donor’s kidney in preparation for a kidney transplant. This innovative surgery was performed on a brave female donor who selflessly gave her 17-year-old relative who was experiencing chronic kidney failure as a result of type 1 diabetes the gift of life.”
According to GPHC, the young patient no longer needs additional dialysis because the transplanted kidney is functioning very well following the successful surgery. He acknowledged the work of the nursing, general surgery, anesthesia, and vascular teams in addition to the transplant and transplant team.
GPHC indicated that it is committed to improving healthcare in Guyana by utilizing “the resources and capabilities now available. The hospital is set to broaden the spectrum of laparoscopic services offered.
