Following a call by the Georgetown Chamber of Commerce and Industry (GCCI) on Wednesday for the Government of Guyana to consider applying the Principle of Reciprocity as it relates to trade with the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago, executives of the GCCI met with Trinidad and Tobago’s High Commissioner to Guyana, His Excellency Conrad Enill.
Among the issues discussed at the meeting was “the private sector’s longstanding concern about impediments posed by Trinidad’s non-tariff barriers, as well as the need for, and compliance with, Guyana’s local content legislation by Trinidadian companies
According to a statement by the GCCI, the High Commissioner has committed to assessing “the non-tariff barriers affecting Guyana’s bilateral trade with TT” following the provision of a copy of the dossier that adumbrates how Trinidad’s NTBs impact Guyanese companies seeking to export their products to the twin-island republic.
Moreover, Trinidad and Tobago was identified as an essential transshipment point for goods coming from Guyana
Trinidad and Tobago’s Ministry of Trade and Industry in a press statement yesterday stated that the country is committed to “improved intra-regional CARICOM trade and remained open to increased imports from Guyana and other CARICOM members.”
