The Georgetown Chamber and Commerce and Industry (GCCI) yesterday met with the Head of the Guyana Power and Light Corporation (GPL) Kesh Nandlall to discuss electricity supply challenges, its impact on the private sector, and expectations for the future.
The meeting with the Head of the Executive Management Committee of GPL was opened to the general membership of GCCI to inform members of “GPL’s plans for the future given how the frequent power outages have been affecting the private sector’s ability to operate efficiently and at maximum capacity.”
In a statement on its social media platform, the GCCI noted that Nandlall’s presentation addressed a myriad of issues and concerns including the current challenges facing the electricity company and its plans to resolve these challenges
“Mr Nandlall gave a detailed presentation on various aspects of GPL’s operations including current and projected demand, as well as current and projected generation capacity in the immediate, shot, and medium term, and plans for the integration of renewable energy sources.”
Current and future investments in relation to GPL’s transmission and distribution network were also addressed.
GPL last Thursday in a press release, GPL announced that it signed a contract with Urbancon Concessions Investment to charter a powership with a total capacity of 36 Megawatts for two years on Monday, April 13
GPL paid a mobilisation fee of One Million US dollars to the company. Furthermore, “ the contract requires GPL to pay UCI a fee of 6.62 US cents per KWh as a monthly charter fee for the powership and a monthly operation and maintenance fee of 0.98 US cents per kWh, based on electricity generated.”
The powership is expected to be fully operational by May 8. The electricity generated by the powership is expected to alleviate the frequent blackouts countrywide.
