Protesting teachers in region two were on Friday morning removed from their previous location which was considered to be a “public place” but in a twist of faith public spirited citizens offered an empty lot opposite the original strike location. The business community, in a show of support of the striking teachers, provided tents, chairs, water and food supplies. It was reported that a temporary wooden structure will be erected to house the striking teachers. Post mistresses of a neighbouring post office demonstrated solidarity by donating cases of bottled water.

Mr. Martin Samaroo, the regional Sports Representative, this morning reported that he is forced to have multiple jobs to make ends meet. He addressed the large sum budgeted for the advancement of the education sector, stating that it is not entering the pockets of the teachers serving in the system. Samaroo argued that the development of education will not put bread on tables or pay bills.

Scores of teachers from the Essequibo coast from schools like Anna Regina Multilateral, Dartmouth and Abram Zuil as well as the riverine areas like Pomeroon were a part of the industrial action in region 2. Firm in their stance for better wages these educators had placards with the slogan “We teach, we care, give us our fair share”.
