Early this morning Akeem Wong, a convict serving a 15-year sentence for the rape, managed to escape from the Mazaruni prison compound. Wong, also known as “Ben Laden,” was charged and sentenced in 2020 for the sexual penetration of a 14-year-old girl.

According to the Guyana Prison Service, Wong accompanied by another prisoner Gilbert Gill were working in the ‘wood bush’ while under the supervision of Prison Officer Torres. Officer Torres gave Wong permission to relieve himself of his bowel movements while he was on duty. But after about five minutes, when Officer Torres went to see how Wong was doing, he found him missing. Torres immediately sounded the alarm, and the perimeter of the grounds were searched.

Details are still emerging as the inquiry progresses.
