On January 31st, fifteen members of the Guyana Fire Service responded swiftly to a fire at Lot 20 Norton Street, Wortmanville, Georgetown. The fire caused significant damage to the livelihood of Ms. Tinesa Lewis and fourteen other occupants of the late Carlton Holder’s two-story wood and concrete building.
Before the Guyana Fire Service arrived on the scene, neighbours had already begun attempting to extinguish the fire with buckets of water. The Guyana Fire Service reported that the fire, which was believed to have been deliberately ignited, badly damaged a double bed frame, mattress, PVC ceiling, glass cabinet, and glass door.
According to the Guyana Fire Service, Ms. Tinesa Lewis stated during the investigative process that neighbors saw smoke on the eastern side of the ground level and quickly organized a bucket brigade to put out the fire. She further stated that, based on the fact that this is the third instance, she believed the fire was intentionally started.
Following a thorough investigation of the home CCTV footage revealed a woman attempting to start a fire through a window. The suspect has been arrested and an investigation is ongoing.
