President Ali at the Guyana Police Force’s Annual Officers’ Conference last Thursday, highlighted the phenomenon of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and how this expanding technology has made its way into many facets of human existence. The president called for a coordinated effort across the many branches of government to tackle this issue.

Studies show that artificial intelligence is surpassing the capabilities of machines created by humans and is evolving at an astounding rate. These days, this technology can be used for medical diagnosis, software development, object detection, language translation, and music production. Although this technology is still proving to be valuable, it is crucial that its utilization is carefully regulated.

In his speech, the Commander-in-Chief argued that since improper management of this technology may have far-reaching consequences, structures and procedures needed to be put in place to appropriately oversee it. Since AI is touching many areas of governance, proper regulation of this technology must first start with general discussions.

Recognizing the advantages and disadvantages of artificial intelligence The University of Guyana has started to control how its students utilize artificial intelligence.

The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP)  said in a recent article regarding the impact of AI in Latin America and the Caribbean that immediate action is needed to harness AI as a force for good and a catalyst for improved human and environmental well-being. Further, they stated that only through decisive actions and cooperation can we shape a future where AI drives development in LAC that leaves no one behind.
