Advancing the Argyle Declaration: Guyana-Venezuela Ministers Set for Crucial Talks in Brazil

Tomorrow, January 25, 2024, in Brasilia, Brazil, the foreign ministers of Venezuela Hon Yván Gil Pinto, and Guyana Hon Hugh Todd will meet. This meeting follows the meeting between Presidents Irfaan Ali of Guyana and Nicholas Maduro of Venezuela in December last. The two presidents met in Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, where they agreed on the Argyle Declaration.  

The Foreign Affairs Minister will be joined by Foreign Secretary Robert Persaud, Ambassador Elizabeth Harper, recently appointed ambassador to Venezuela Dr. Richard Van West-Charles, Director of Frontiers Donnette Streete, and Vernon Robinson, the charge d’affaires at the Guyana Embassy in Brazil.   

 When asked how significant the meeting between the foreign ministers of Venezuela and Guyana is tomorrow, His Excellency Dr. Irfan Ali stated “I think that the meeting is a very important step in fulfilling what was agreed on in St Vincent, and that was the establishment of this commission to look at all the consequential matters to develop an agenda, so that the conversation between the two countries can continue and setting the stage for the second meeting between the two presidents.” 

In the Joint Argyle Declaration, Venezuela and Guyana pledged to maintain communication on the matters they had agreed upon and to not escalate any disputes or arguments.
