Timehri Man gets 4 years imprisonment, fined $1.7M after weed farm bust

On January 31, Nishart Samsundar, age 20, appeared before Magistrate Scarce at the Diamond Magistrate’s Court, where he was charged with the offences of Possession of Narcotics for the purpose of trafficking, and Cultivating a prohibited plant. 

Pleading guilty, Samsundar was sentenced to four years imprisonment and fined $1,778,400 for the trafficking offence and sentenced to four years for cultivating the prohibited plant.  

Both sentences are to be run concurrently, and so he will serve four years in prison. 

Last Thursday, January 25, ranks of the Customs Anti-Narcotic Unit (CANU) conducted an eradication exercise at the Hauraruni Village, off the Linden/; Soesdyke Highway. There, the ranks destroyed about 200 cannabis plants and approximately 100 pounds of cannabis that were found near two camps. 

A 12-gauge cartridge was also found. 

Nazelena Ali, age 33, and Samsundar, both of Timehri North, East Bank Demerara, were arrested and escorted to CANU’s Headquarters along with a 1.976 kg of narcotics and the cartridge.
