The Guyana Technical Training College in Tain, Port Mourant, Region Six (East Berbice-Corentyne) will begin operations with a $50 million grant approved by the National Assembly’s Committee of Supplies.
Minister of Parliamentary Affairs and Governance Gail Teixeira justified the financing, which is part of a total of $1.4 billion for administration under the Office of the President.
This establishment is a government initiative created to provide practical instruction to thousands of Guyanese students pursuing employment opportunities in the local and regional markets.
After a series of inquiries, Minister Gail Teixeira revealed that Professor Clement K. Sankat, the college’s director, gets paid a total of $1.49 million a month in salary. Minister Teixeira proposed that “the $50 million is for startup operations for the college and setting it up,” indicating that the fifty (50) million Guyana dollars that have been earmarked will help with the establishment of this college.
Through the Greater Guyana Initiative (GGI), the three coventurers in the Stabroek Block—ExxonMobil, Hess, and CNOOC—and the government are working together to establish the college.
The government-funded Hospitality and Tourism Institute and ExxonMobil-funded oil and gas training programs are anticipated to be facilitated by the college. This program will focus on teaching individuals to work directly on floating production, storage, and offloading (FPSO) vessels, while there will also be a third component that would train people for the agriculture industry.
