Minister Susan Rodrigues in her address to the national assembly boasted of the fifty-one new areas slated for housing development, the distribution of 30,000 house lots, the development of new schemes as well as several subsidized initiatives that provided turnkey houses for citizens across the country.

The MP stated that achievements like this take “a carefully crafted strategy to deliver affordable housing to every segment of our population across the ten administrative regions. She further affirmed that “this is the most successful housing programme in our country’s history.”

Ms. Rodrigues contended that “the progress of the housing sector is visible for all to see. You can feel it, touch it, measure it. Hundreds of people have received their house lots in the last few weeks. People who are receiving an asset for the first time in their lives.”

In an attempt to refute the claims of the growing lack of access to affordable housing, the housing minister posited that “in 2019, the former CEO of the Housing Authority said it costs three million Guyana Dollars to develop a house lot,” and after five years this figure was raised by a mere five hundred thousand dollars.
