Caribbean Agricultural Productivity Improvement Activity (CAPA) was launched at the University of Guyana’s George Walcott Lecture.
The Minister of Agriculture Zulfika Mustapha delivered remarks on behalf of His Excellency, President Dr. Mohamed Irfaan Ali, and noted that the projects will help farmers and stakeholders in the fruit and vegetable industry. This will be done through the promotion of market-driven agricultural practices and technologies, enabling them to readily access domestic and regional markets.
The launch commemorates the start of a new activity designed in response to CARICOM Leaders’ request to the United States to address food security. Following the 9th Summit of the Americas in 2022, U.S. and Caribbean leaders developed joint action plans. Through this, the two bodies and the Government of Guyana will invest in further food security of the region.
In a discussion with a team from CAPA last November, Minister Mustapha revealed that turmeric, coconut and cherries are three valuable chains for support, and are priority areas for development.
Guyanese farmers will join others across the region in benefitting from specialized technical assistance under CAPA’s $5.3 million project. This is funded by the United States Agency for International Development (USAID).
