Fatal accident at Den Amstel leaves cyclist dead

An accident that resulted in the death of a 34-year-old pedal cyclist occurred around 20:19hrs on Monday, January 22nd, on the Den Amstel Public Road, West Coast Guyana.  

According to a release from the Guyana Police Force, the motor lorry GTT 4953, driven by a 24-year-old from Meten-Meer-Zorg, was proceeding west along the southern side of the public road, when the pedal cyclist rode from south to north across the road. 

This caused the lorry driver to swerve right, colliding with the pedal cyclist and causing him to fall under the vehicle. The cyclist’s body was dragged by the lorry some distance from the point of contact along the road. 

The lifeless body of Joel Castang, from Lot 55 Hibiscus Scheme Blankengburg, was picked up and escorted to the Leonora Cottage Hospital, where the body was pronounced dead on arrival by a doctor on duty. 

The body rests at the Ezekiel Funeral Home, awaiting a post-mortem examination. 

The driver, who is in custody of the police, was subjected to a breathalyzer test, and no trace of alcohol was found.  

The investigation is ongoing.
