Technical collaboration committee to be established by the Ministry of Labour to address workplace safety in the Construction Sector

The Ministry of Labour yesterday announced that it met with stakeholders for the purpose of the establishment of a technical collaboration committee to address workplace safety and health in the construction sector. 

Present at the meeting were Hon Joseph Hamilton, Minister of Labour, Permanent Secretary Mae Toussaint Jr Thomas, Senior Occupation, Safety and Health Officers, representatives from the Ministry of Public Works, the Central Housing and Planning Authority (CH&PA), the National Procurement and Tender Administration Board (NPTAB) and Consultant within the OSH department of the Ministry of Labour, Gweneth King. 

At a recently held end of year press conference, Minister Hamilton contended that the number of workplace fatalities declined in the year 2023 in comparison to the previous three years: “We have moved from 32 deaths to 21 fatalities in 2022 and 20 in 2023.” 

Moreover, according to the Ministry the committee is expected to meet soon to finalize plans 

In the 2024 National Budget presented in the National Assembly on January 15, Senior Minister within the Office of the President with responsibility of Finance disclosed that $221.4 B was allocated to Ministry of Public Works.
