The Board of Industrial Training (BIT) announced the commencement of a $53 million project to construct a new training centre and labour office in Region One. This initiative was unveiled during a sod-turning ceremony in Port Kaituma’s Matarkai sub-district on Wednesday, May 8, 2024
The facility, which is expected to be completed in six months, will be located at Oronoque and will feature cutting-edge Welding and Fabrication and Joinery units adhering to Caribbean Vocational Qualifications (CVQs) standards.
The project is made possible through collaborative efforts between the Ministry of Housing and Water and the Regional Democratic Council (RDC).
Speaking at the ceremony, Minister of Labour, Joseph Hamilton, emphasized the transformative impact the centre would have on the region’s socio-economic landscape. “Region One has long awaited a technical training facility, and today’s event symbolizes the government’s unwavering dedication to meeting this critical need,” Minister Hamilton remarked. He also reiterated the government’s pledge to deliver comprehensive training programs tailored to address the region’s unique challenges.
When completed, the centre will not only serve as a hub for skills development but will also aid in strengthening workplace safety. Moreover, a dedicated technical officer from BIT will oversee operations, ensuring prompt response to labour-related issues and fostering a culture of compliance.
Construction is expected to commence shortly.
