The People’s Progressive Party (PPP) yesterday concluded its 32nd Delegates and Observers Congress at the Arthur Chung Conference Centre, where the results of the Central Committee elections were announced. The objective of the elections was to determine the leadership and direction of the ruling party which is a significant political force in Guyana.
In a competitive race, Irfaan Ali, the President of Guyana, emerged as the top contender, securing a commanding lead with 2308 votes. His victory can be seen as reflective of his influence within the party and reaffirming his position as a key figure in Guyanese politics.
Following closely behind is Bharrat Jagdeo, the Vice President of Guyana, who garnered 2257 votes. Jagdeo’s strong showing reflects his enduring popularity and pivotal role within the PPP. Vice President, Jagdeo holds significant sway over government policies and decisions, making his position within the party all the more significant.
Mr Zulfikar Mustapha, Minister of Agriculture also emerged as a prominent figure within the PPP and secured the third position with 2174 votes. Mustapha’s performance underscores his relevance and influence within the party’s hierarchy.
The results also shed light on the election of candidate members or non-voting members, where Deodat Indar emerged as the top-ranked candidate with 1317 votes. Mae Thomas, Andrew Forsythe, Rion Peters, and Jason Abdullah were the other non-voting members elected.
The outcome of the PPP Central Committee elections reflects the party’s internal dynamics and the evolving landscape of Guyanese politics.
