General Secretary of the Peoples Progressive Party and Vice President, Dr, Bharrat Jagdeo, yesterday allayed the fears of members of the public when he announced that there will be no increase in the electricity bill of consumers when the powership becomes operational.
This announcement was made by the GS during his weekly press briefing yesterday, Thursday.
“There will be no increase in the price of electricity because of this rental.”
Jagdeo further stated that the government is already subsiding power to people, businesses etc. at 22 cents per kilowatt.
On Thursday through a press release, GPL announced that it signed a contract with Urbancon Concessions Investment to charter a powership with a total capacity of 36 Megawatts for two years on Monday, April 13
GPL paid a mobilisation fee of One Million US dollars to the company. Furthermore, “ the contract requires GPL to pay UCI a fee of 6.62 US cents per KWh as a monthly charter fee for the powership and a monthly operation and maintenance fee of 0.98 US cents per kWh, based on electricity generated.”
The powership is expected to be fully operation by May 8. The electricity generated by the powership is expected to alleviate the frequent blackouts countrywide.
