In an effort to meet the demands of an already secured market in St Lucia, The National Agriculture and Extension Institute (NAREI) has embarked on setting up twenty-five shade houses

The twenty-five shade houses will accommodate the cultivation of two varieties of hot bell peppers: bull nose and tiger teeth. “Each cycle within the 25 shade houses is anticipated to accommodate approximately 11, 250 pepper plants.

Once set up, the shade houses are expected to yield 75,000 pounds of pepper for each cycle. Moreover, 75 tons of fresh peppers will be produced annually from the two cycles.

The Government of Guyana has committed to leading the charge to significantly reducing the Caribbean’s Food import bill while also promoting food security. This initiative will serve to strengthen trade ties between Guyana and St Lucia.
