Construction works on the Georgetown Seafront Resort and Conference Center have once again been stalled as the mayor and City Council placed a cease order on the fence of the Carifesta Avenue land on Monday afternoon.

This action follows the long-standing controversy between the central government of Guyana and the mayor and City Council. The government agreed to the sale of the Carifesta Avenue land, owned by the Guyana National Service (GNS) and the National Insurance Scheme (NIS) to the Assets Qatari group. The mayor and City Council has since challenged this decision as the MCC as well as the Guyana Lands and Surveys Commission (GLSC) produced Transports for this land.

On Monday afternoon during a meeting, the issue concerning the ownership of the land in question was addressed. The mayor of Georgetown His worship Alfred Mentore asserted that taking into account the continuing disagreement over who owns the land, the land’s owners or occupants should have been served with a cease-and-desist order to stop any work from being done at the site.

The city engineer, Mr. Colvern Venture, was instructed to deliver the cease order to the Qatari Assets group. He was, however, forced to place the notice on the gate of the land in question because there were no representatives from the organization present. During the heated Mayor and Councillors meeting, the city engineer claimed that the transport produced by the Mayor and City Council did not correspond with the land in question, but rather to another land located south of Queen’s College.

The Mayor, Mr. Mentore, stated that the Mayor and City Council are prepared to take legal action and are consulting with lawyers for advice on how to proceed.
