In wake of the launch of the Energy Conference & Supply Chain Expo, the GTU moved their protest to key access road of the Guyana Marriott. On Day 11 of the Guyana Teachers’ Union nationwide protest educators, parents, students, vendors and public spirited came out in support of the nation’s educators.
In front of the Light house this morning, the protestors could be heard singing gospel songs and chants embodying the plight of the teachers. These chants called on the government to pay the teachers their monies and for them to return to the classrooms. Among the roaring voices of teachers and parents, the tender voices of primary-aged students were heard chanting “teachers are our second parents, and we need them”
The GTU President Mr. Mark Lyte this morning underscored his dissatisfaction with the Government’s reluctance to engage in official negotiation talks with the GTU, but rather face “international embarrassment” even as dozens of high-level global officials, diplomats and investors gathered inside the Marriott Hotel for the prestigious Energy Conference & Supply Chain Expo.
Dr. Lyte called on the government to meet with the GTU and address the needs of teachers. The GTU President posited that the teachers would continue to protest peacefully as they have done for the past ten days.
