Dr. Mark Lyte, President of the Guyana Teachers’ Union (GTU) this morning reiterated the organization’s position with regards to the acts conducted by an individual who is alleged to be of “unsound mind”. The individual who appeared to be an APNU+AFC activist yesterday morning, conducted what appeared to be an obeah ritual on the bridge of the Ministry of Education. Lyte posited that the GTU does not support acts of a “superstitious or vulgar” nature.

The GTU President affirmed that its members have conducted themselves in a decent manner, at all the other strike lines across the country. He assured that it is not the intention of the GTU to divide the nation but rather seek to bring a resolution to the ongoing challenges faced by teachers.

The GTU in an official statement yesterday expressed their commitment to fostering a “community of integrity, respect, and inclusion”. Furthermore, they condemned these actions of the individual in question and any other act that goes against the organization’s principles.

The GTU continues to call on the Ministries of Education and Labour to invite them to a formal meeting to negotiate the terms of teachers’ resumption to work.
