The Ministry of Home Affairs’ Ministerial Taskforce on Trafficking, over the past month has made good on its promise to fund initiatives in relation to trafficking in persons in Guyana. This was expressed by Mr. Daniel Griffith the Coordinator of the Ministerial Taskforce on Trafficking in Persons, earlier this month. Training sessions were held with government agencies like the Guyana Geology and Mines Commissions (GGMC) and private organizations like LGBTQ+ Advocates and Civil Society Groups.

The training sessions held with the GGMC provided the twenty (20) participants with the necessary information about the signs of human trafficking, the psychosocial support that victims require, organizations that assist victims of human trafficking, and the national referral system that is in place for reporting suspected cases of human trafficking.

Training sessions with LGBTQ+ advocates and civil society groups, on the other hand, addressed the high possibility of LGBTQ+ people being victims of human trafficking. The Taskforce designed this program with the intention of equipping LGBTQ+ Advocates and Groups with the know-how, abilities, and connections required to support the government in effectively combating this crime from all angles.

Notwithstanding advancements in rights and activism, the Ministry of Home Affairs underscored that to effectively prevent human trafficking, cooperation between governmental entities, law enforcement, civil society, and the commercial sector is paramount.
