The Windward Islands Teachers Union (WITU) in St. Maarten stands in solidarity with the Guyana Teachers’ Union (GTU), as they continue their strike action against Ministry of Education and Government of Guyana.

Today marks Day 6, as teachers across the country stay away from the classroom in defiance of the Ministry of Education and Government of Guyana. They continued last week’s Union-led strike and continue to call for an increase in remuneration.

In a solidarity message to the GTU, the President of WITU, Stuart Johnson, wrote, “We are concerned that we have learned of the long negotiations between the GTU and the government, culminating in the regrettable need for industrial action. The dedication and resilience of the teachers in Guyana, who have taken to the streets in pursuit of their rights, are commendable and emblematic of the strength of our profession.”

In the message, it was stated that the injustices faced by teachers of Guyana are similar to those faced by educators globally and calls for a united stand against the opposing forces.

WITU pledges their full support to the GTU and extends their solidarity to the teachers of Guyana as they take industrial strike action.

Just last week, the Caribbean Union of Teachers (CUT) made public their support of the GTU and the teachers, as they seek to negotiate favourable compensation for their work.
