On Day Three of the nationwide Industrial action organized by the Guyana Teachers’ Union, the opposition in a press release expressed their unwavering support for the demonstrating teachers.
Teachers across the nation were informed by the Opposition that they stand united and in solidarity with them in their pursuit of “fairness and justice”. They emphasized the importance of teachers’ commitment to educating the country’s youth.
The Release strongly condemned the actions taken by the Ministry of Education in what they termed “attempts to undermine the duly elected representatives” of teachers and their refusal to address the union’s concerns.
In like manner they rebuked the nonresponsive “behaviour” of both Ministers of Labour and Education Mr. Hamilton and Ms. Manickchand, stating that they’re “anti-union and anti-working class.”
Teachers were also given the assurance that if the collation is successful in the upcoming General Elections, they would put the people’s needs first and make sure that every Guyanese, including teachers, would share in oil-fueled prosperity.
They conveyed that through a joint effort, the teaching profession can be meaningful and rewarding, and the education system could be transformed making it unlike any other in the Caribbean.
