$728M Bids Open for Major Road Expansion: Aubrey Barker Road to Link Georgetown to Enmore

On Tuesday the Ministry of Public Works gave an update on the ongoing works happening at Aubrey Barker Road, South Ruimveldt, Georgetown Guyana. During the present administration’s tenure, there has been a strong emphasis on Guyana’s infrastructure development with the construction of new roads and bridges, as well as the restoration and widening of existing ones. 

The Ministry of Public Works reported that tenders are presently open for the extension of this route for another 1.3 kilometers, as well as its widening to accommodate four lanes. Bids are currently out for Lot Three of the Rehabilitation/ Construction/Upgrade of Aubrey Barker Road which is estimated at $728m and Lot 4 at $728m as well. Lot One of this project was obtained by Colin Talbot Construction for $227 million, and Lot Two was won by Surrey Paving and Associates for $226 million.  

The Aubrey Barker Road is expected to be the foundation of one of government’s many connectivity projects, through which a road will lead to Enmore, East Coast Demerara.  

The Minister of Public Works, Bishop Juan Edghill, announced that there have been various delays, one of which being the removal of utility wires. The Minister went on to say that the Ministry of Public Works has signed Memorandums of Understanding with many utility providers, including GWI, GTT, Digicel, GPL, and NDMA, with effect from January 2024.  

The MoU outlined how these entities will collaborate with the Ministry to prevent interruptions. He urged all utility companies to follow the MOU for the benefit of the citizens of these areas, who rely on these critical pieces of infrastructure.
