The Medical Laboratory Technician Programme for the first batch of students in Region Six was launched on Saturday, January 27 at the Regional Health Services Boardroom in New Amsterdam.
In attendance was the Minister of Health, Honourable Dr. Frank Anthony, the Regional Chairman of Region Six, Mr David Armogan; the Regional Executive Officer, Mr. Narindra Persaud; the Director General of the MoH, Dr. Vishwa Mahadeo; Medical Laboratory Technologists, Mr Ron Ross, among other dignitaries.
Twenty-three students were admitted to this program, which is run by the MoH Health Sciences Division, for a one-year training term. The students enrolled in the programme hail from Orealla, Micobie, Skeldon, Crabwood Creek, and Port Mourant.
To progress in other areas of medicine, the Health Minister encouraged people enrolling in the program to pursue their goals beyond this training. Dr Anthony stated “Once you start with the basics, you can be in one of the clinical labs that we have. You can be in blood banking. You can get involved in more specialized labs. We’re going to do a lot of work on infectious diseases, and if you have an interest in those, you can get involved,”
Ms Chandroutie Persaud, Deputy Director of Health Sciences, challenged the students to complete the program with diligence.
